Amba–Rama–Bhishma Dialogue on Vow and Refuge
The verse highlights ethical restraint in warfare: even when conflict seems imminent, one should seek peaceful resolution by appealing to dharma—here, the inviolable respect owed within the guru–disciple relationship—so that violence is avoided or minimized.
Bhishma declares that he will personally approach Parashurama (Jamadagni’s son) and repeatedly request him not to engage in battle with Bhishma, emphasizing that Bhishma is Parashurama’s disciple and that such a fight would violate the propriety of that bond.
