Strī Parva 1: Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Lament and Saṃjaya’s Consolation
कुरुवृद्धस्य भीष्मस्य गान्धार्या विदुरस्यथ च,“महाराज! महाबाहो! भरतनन्दन! कुरुकुलके ज्ञानवृद्ध पुरुष भीष्म, गान्धारी, विदुर, द्रोणाचार्य, शरद्वानके पुत्र कृपाचार्य, श्रीकृष्ण, बुद्धिमान् देवर्षि नारद, अमिततेजस्वी वेदव्यास तथा अन्य महर्षियोंकी भी बातें आपके पुत्रने नहीं मानी
kuruvṛddhasya bhīṣmasya gāndhāryā vidurasya tathā ca | mahārāja mahābāho bharatanandana kurukulake jñānavṛddha-puruṣā bhīṣmaḥ gāndhārī viduraḥ droṇācāryaḥ śaradvāna-putraḥ kṛpācāryaḥ śrīkṛṣṇaḥ buddhimān devarṣi-nāradaḥ amita-tejasvī vedavyāsaḥ tathā anye maharṣayaḥ | etā api bātāḥ tava putreṇa na mānitāḥ ||
Vaiśaṃpāyana berkata: “Wahai Raja, wahai yang berlengan perkasa, keturunan Bharata! Putramu tidak mengindahkan nasihat para sesepuh dan orang bijak dari wangsa Kuru—Bhīṣma, Gāndhārī, Vidura, Droṇa, Kṛpa putra Śaradvat, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, dewa-ṛṣi Nārada yang arif, resi Vedavyāsa yang bercahaya tak terukur, serta para mahārṣi lainnya. Dengan menolak petuah dharma, ia memilih jalan yang menuju kebinasaan.”
वैशमग्पायन उवाच
Ignoring the counsel of the wise—especially elders and dharma-minded advisors—leads rulers toward adharma and inevitable suffering; humility and receptivity to righteous advice are essential to kingship.
Vaiśaṃpāyana reminds Dhṛtarāṣṭra that his son rejected repeated warnings from revered elders, teachers, and sages (Bhīṣma, Gāndhārī, Vidura, Droṇa, Kṛpa, Kṛṣṇa, Nārada, Vyāsa, etc.), a refusal that set the stage for catastrophe and the grief described in the Strī Parva.
