Chapter 78: Royal Responsibility for Wealth, Social Order, and the Protection of Dvijas

Kekaya Exemplum

मेरे राज्यमें कोई भी ब्रह्मचर्यका पालन न करनेवाला भिक्षा नहीं माँगता अथवा भिक्षु या संन्यासी ब्रह्मचर्यका पालन किये बिना नहीं रहता। बिना ऋत्विजके मेरे यहाँ होम नहीं होता; फिर तुम कैसे मेरे भीतर घुस आये? ।। (कृतं राज्यं मया सर्व राज्यस्थेनापि कार्यवत्‌ | नाहं व्युत्क्रमित: सत्यान्मामकान्तरमाविश: ।।) राज्यसिंहासनपर स्थित होकर भी मैंने सारा राज्यकार्य कर्तव्य-पालनकी दृष्टिसे किया है और कभी सत्यसे मैं विचलित नहीं हुआ हूँ; तो भी मेरे शरीरके भीतर तुम्हारा प्रवेश कैसे हुआ है? ।। नावजानाम्यहं वैद्यान्न वृद्धान्न तपस्विन: । राष्ट्र स्वपति जागर्मि मामकान्तरमाविश:,मैं विद्वानों, वृद्धों तथा तपस्वी जनोंका कभी तिरस्कार नहीं करता हूँ। जब सारा राष्ट्र सोता है, उस समय भी मैं उसकी रक्षाके लिये जागता रहता हूँ, तथापि तुम मेरे शरीरके भीतर कैसे चल आये?

bhīṣma uvāca |

kṛtaṃ rājyaṃ mayā sarvaṃ rājya-sthenāpi kāryavat |

nāhaṃ vyutkramitaḥ satyān māmaka-antaram āviśaḥ ||

nāvajānāmy ahaṃ vaidyān na vṛddhān na tapāsvinaḥ |

rāṣṭraṃ svapati jāgarmi māmaka-antaram āviśaḥ ||

Bhishma berkata: “Walau duduk di singgasana kerajaan, aku telah menunaikan setiap kewajiban pemerintahan sebagaimana mestinya. Aku tak pernah menyimpang dari kebenaran—maka bagaimana engkau dapat memasuki diriku yang terdalam? Aku tidak meremehkan tabib, para sesepuh, maupun para pertapa. Bahkan ketika seluruh negeri terlelap, aku berjaga demi perlindungannya; namun bagaimana engkau menemukan jalan masuk ke dalam tubuhku?”
