Shloka 33

भीष्मजी कहते हैं--राजन्‌! मान्धाताको इस प्रकार उपदेश देकर इन्द्ररूपधारी भगवान्‌ विष्णु मरुदगणोंके साथ अविनाशी एवं सनातन परमपद विष्णुधामको चले गये ।। एवं प्रवर्तिते धर्मे पुरा सुचरितेडनघ । कः: क्षत्रमवमन्येत चेतनावान्‌ बहुश्रुत:ः,निष्पाप नरेश्वर! इस प्रकार प्राचीनकालमें भगवान्‌ विष्णुने ही राजधर्मको प्रचलित किया और सत्पुरुषोंद्वारा वह भलीभाँति आचरणमें लाया गया। ऐसी दशामें कौन ऐसा सचेत और बहुश्रुत विद्वान होगा, जो क्षात्रधर्मकी अवहेलना करेगा?

bhīṣma uvāca—rājan! māndhātāram evaṃ upadiśya indrarūpadhārī bhagavān viṣṇuḥ marudgaṇaiḥ saha avināśi evaṃ sanātanaṃ paramaṃ padaṃ viṣṇudhāma jagāma. evaṃ pravartite dharme purā sucarite ’nagha, kaḥ kṣatraṃ avamanyeta cetanāvān bahuśrutaḥ? niṣpāpa nareśvara! evaṃ prācīnakāle bhagavatā viṣṇunā eva rājadharmaḥ pravartitaḥ, satpuruṣaiś ca sa suṣṭhu ācaritaḥ; tādṛśe sati ko nāma kṣātradharmam avajñāsyāt?

Bhishma berkata: “Wahai Raja! Setelah demikian menasihati Mandhata, Bhagavan Wisnu—yang mengambil wujud Indra—berangkat bersama para Marut menuju kedudukan tertinggi yang abadi dan tak binasa, yakni Wisnudhama, kediaman-Nya sendiri. Wahai yang tanpa dosa! Bila dharma telah ditegakkan sejak zaman purba dan dijalankan dengan baik oleh orang-orang saleh, siapakah insan yang sadar dan berilmu luas akan meremehkan dharma para ksatria? Wahai penguasa manusia yang tak bercela! Sesungguhnya Wisnu-lah yang mula-mula menggerakkan kewajiban raja, dan para bajik menjalaninya dengan setia; dalam keadaan demikian, siapa yang mungkin memandang hina dharma kesatria?”

Royal duty (rājadharma) and the kshatriya code are not merely human conventions; they are portrayed as divinely instituted by Vishnu and validated by ancient righteous practice. Therefore, a discerning and learned person should not disparage kshatriya-dharma.
