Kṛṣṇa’s Dhyāna and the Prompt to Question Bhīṣma (कृष्णध्यानं भीष्मप्रश्नप्रेरणा च)
मैं आपकी शरणमें आया हुआ भक्त हूँ और माथा टेककर आपके चरणोंमें प्रणाम करता हूँ। धर्मात्माओंमें श्रेष्ठ प्रभो! इस ध्यानका यथार्थ तत्त्व मुझे बता दीजिये ।। ततः स्वे गोचरे न्यस्य मनोबुद्धीन्द्रियाणि सः । स्मितपूर्वमुवाचेदं भगवान् वासवानुज:,युधिष्ठिरकी यह प्रार्थना सुनकर मन, बुद्धि तथा इन्द्रियोंको अपने स्थानमें स्थापित करके इन्द्रके छोटे भाई भगवान् श्रीकृष्ण मुस्कराते हुए इस प्रकार बोले
ahaṁ bhavataḥ śaraṇaṁ prāpto bhaktaḥ, śirasā ca bhavataḥ pādayoḥ praṇamāmi | dharmātmanāṁ śreṣṭha prabho! asya dhyānasya yathārtha-tattvaṁ me brūhi || tataḥ sve gocare nyasya mano-buddhīndriyāṇi saḥ | smita-pūrvam uvācedaṁ bhagavān vāsavānujaḥ ||
Yudhiṣṭhira menyatakan dirinya sebagai bhakta yang berlindung, bersujud dengan kepala di kaki Sang Tuhan, dan memohon penjelasan hakikat sejati meditasi ini. Mendengar permohonan itu, Śrī Kṛṣṇa—adinda Indra—menarik kembali pikiran, budi, dan indra ke lingkupnya yang semestinya, lalu dengan senyum lembut mulai bersabda demikian.
युधिछिर उवाच
The verse emphasizes that true instruction in meditation is grounded in humility and surrender: the seeker approaches with devotion and reverence, and the teacher responds from a state of inner composure—mind, intellect, and senses settled in their proper domain—indicating that meditation is fundamentally the disciplined re-centering of one’s inner faculties toward truth.
Yudhiṣṭhira petitions Kṛṣṇa, calling him the foremost among the righteous, to explain the real principle of meditation. Kṛṣṇa, identified by the epithet ‘Indra’s younger brother,’ collects his inner faculties and then smiles and begins his reply, marking the transition from the king’s request to the Lord’s teaching.
