धर्मस्य बहुद्वारत्वम् — Nārada’s Audience with Indra (Śānti-parva 340)

'जो नेत्रोंसे देखा नहीं जाता, त्वचासे जिसका स्पर्श नहीं होता, गन्ध ग्रहण करनेवाली प्राणेन्द्रियसे जो सूँघनेमें नहीं आता, जो रसनेन्द्रियकी पहुँचसे परे है; सत्त्व, रज और तम नामक गुण जिसपर कोई प्रभाव नहीं डाल पाते, जो सर्वव्यापी, साक्षी और सम्पूर्ण जगत्‌का आत्मा कहलाता है, सम्पूर्ण प्राणियोंका नाश हो जानेपर भी जो स्वयं नष्ट नहीं होता है, जिसे अजन्मा, नित्य, सनातन, निर्गुण और निष्कल बताया गया है, जो चौबीस तत्त्वोंसे परे पचीसवें तत्त्वके रूपमें विख्यात है, जिसे अन्तर्यामी पुरुष, निष्क्रिय तथा ज्ञानमय नेत्रोंसे ही देखने योग्य बताया जाता है, जिसमें प्रवेश करके श्रेष्ठ द्विज यहाँ मुक्त हो जाते हैं, वही सनातन परमात्मा है। उसीको वासुदेव नामसे जानना चाहिये

yaḥ netraiḥ na dṛśyate, tvacā yasya sparśaḥ na bhavati, gandha-grahaṇena prāṇendriyeṇa yaḥ na ghrāyate, yaḥ rasanendriyasya gocara-ātītaḥ; sattva-rajas-tamaḥ-saṃjñakā guṇāḥ yasmin na kiñcid prabhavanti; yaḥ sarvavyāpī sākṣī ca samastasya jagataḥ ātmā ucyate; sarva-prāṇi-nāśe ’pi yaḥ svayaṃ na naśyati; yaḥ ajanmā nityaḥ sanātanaḥ nirguṇaḥ niṣkalaś ca iti nirdiṣṭaḥ; yaḥ caturviṃśati-tattvāt paraḥ pañcaviṃśa-tattva-rūpeṇa vikhyātaḥ; yaḥ antaryāmī puruṣaḥ niṣkriyaḥ jñānamaya-netraiḥ eva draṣṭavyaḥ iti uktaḥ; yasmin praviśya śreṣṭhā dvijā iha mucyante—sa eva sanātanaḥ paramātmā; tam eva vāsudeva-nāmnā jñātavyam.

Bhishma berkata: “Itulah Kenyataan yang tak dapat dilihat oleh mata, tak dapat disentuh oleh kulit, tak dapat ditangkap sebagai bau oleh indria penciuman, dan berada di luar jangkauan rasa; yang tak tersentuh oleh tiga guṇa—sattva, rajas, dan tamas; yang meliputi segalanya, Sang Saksi, dan disebut sebagai Ātman seluruh jagat; yang tidak binasa walau semua makhluk binasa; yang dinyatakan tak berkelahiran, kekal, purba, tanpa sifat, dan tak terbagi; yang termasyhur sebagai prinsip ke-25 melampaui dua puluh empat; yang disebut Penguasa Batin (Antaryāmin), Sang Puruṣa yang tak bertindak, hanya dapat disaksikan dengan mata pengetahuan—memasuki-Nya para dvija terbaik meraih mokṣa di sini: Dialah Paramātman yang abadi. Dialah yang harus dikenal dengan nama Vāsudeva.”

Educational Q&A

The Supreme Self is beyond sensory perception and beyond the three guṇas; it is the all-pervading Witness, unborn and imperishable. Realizing and entering into that inner Reality—identified here as Vāsudeva—brings liberation.

In the Shanti Parva’s instruction on peace and liberation, Bhishma teaches Yudhiṣṭhira about the nature of the highest Reality. He defines the Paramātman in philosophical terms (including Sāṃkhya’s tattvas) and concludes by naming that Supreme as Vāsudeva.
