अध्याय ३२३ — श्वेतद्वीपगमनम्, यज्ञभाग-विवादः, एकान्तिभक्त्या नारायणदर्शन-नियमः (Śvetadvīpa Journey; Dispute over Sacrificial Share; Rule of Nārāyaṇa-vision through Single-minded Devotion)
तपोमूलमिदं सर्व यन्मां पृच्छसि पाण्डव । तदिन्द्रियाणि संयम्य तपो भवति नान्यथा,पाण्डुनन्दन! तुम मुझसे जिसके विषयमें पूछ रहे हो, उस सबकी जड़ तपस्या है। इन्द्रियोंका संयम करनेसे ही तपस्याकी सिद्धि होती है, अन्यथा नहीं
tapo-mūlam idaṁ sarvaṁ yan māṁ pṛcchasi pāṇḍava | tad indriyāṇi saṁyamya tapo bhavati nānyathā pāṇḍu-nandana ||
Bhishma berkata: “Wahai Pāṇḍava, segala yang kau tanyakan kepadaku berakar pada tapa (tapas). Tapa hanya berbuah bila indria dikendalikan; tanpa penguasaan diri, hal itu tak mungkin terjadi, wahai putra Pāṇḍu.”
भीष्म उवाच
Bhīṣma teaches that tapas (austerity/discipline) is the foundational means for attaining the goals of dharma, and that true tapas is impossible without indriya-saṁyama—restraint of the senses. Ethical and spiritual success depends on inner self-mastery rather than mere external practices.
In the Śānti Parva, Yudhiṣṭhira seeks guidance on dharma and right conduct after the war. Bhīṣma, instructing him from his bed of arrows, emphasizes that the matters being asked about ultimately rest on tapas, and he defines tapas chiefly as disciplined control of the senses.
