Śuka’s Guṇa-Transcendence and Vyāsa’s Consolation (शुकगति-वर्णनम्)

नास्मि वर्णोत्तमा जात्या न वैश्या नावरा तथा । तव राजन्‌ सवर्णास्मि शुद्धयोनिरविप्लुता,राजन! मैं जातिसे ब्राह्मणी नहीं हूँ और न वैश्या अथवा शाूद्वा ही हूँ। मैं तो आपके समान वर्णवाली क्षत्रिया ही हूँ। मेरा जन्म शुद्ध वंशमें हुआ है और मैंने अखण्ड ब्रह्मचर्यका पालन किया है

bhīṣma uvāca | nāsmi varṇottamā jātyā na vaiśyā nāvarā tathā | tava rājan savarṇāsmi śuddhayonir aviplutā ||

Wahai Raja, menurut kelahiran aku bukan dari varṇa yang disebut ‘tertinggi’, bukan pula Vaiśyā, dan bukan dari golongan rendah. Aku sevarṇa denganmu—seorang Kṣatriyā. Garis keturunanku murni dan tak terputus, dan aku menjaga ikrar brahmacarya tanpa cela.
