जब अपने लिये अप्रसन्नताका हेतु और दुःखयुक्त भाव अनुभवमें आये तब रजोगुणकी प्रवृत्ति हुई है--ऐसा अपने मनमें विचार करे तथा वैसे किसी कार्यका आरम्भ न करके उसकी ओरसे अपना ध्यान हटा ले ।। अथ यन्मोहसंयुक्तं काये मनसि वा भवेत्‌ | अप्रतर्क्यमविज्ञेयं तमस्तदुपधारयेत्‌,इसी प्रकार शरीर या मनमें जो मोहयुक्त भाव अतर्कित या अविज्ञातरूपसे उपस्थित हो गया हो, उसके विषयमें यही निश्चय करे कि यह तमोगुण है

atha yad moha-saṁyuktaṁ kāye manasi vā bhavet | apratarkyam avijñeyaṁ tamas tad upadhārayet ||

Bila terasa dorongan yang menimbulkan ketidakpuasan bagi diri dan terikat pada penderitaan, pahamilah dalam batin: itulah bangkitnya rajas; maka jangan memulai tindakan apa pun di bawah pengaruhnya, melainkan alihkan perhatian darinya. Demikian pula, bila dalam tubuh atau batin muncul keadaan yang disertai delusi—datang tanpa dapat ditalar dan sukar dikenali—teguhkanlah bahwa itulah tamas.
