श्रेयो-धर्मकर्मविचारः

Inquiry into Śreyas, Dharma, and Karma

“वे सारी बावड़ियाँ पाँच सौ योजन चौड़ी

ṣaḍ jīvavarṇāḥ paramaṃ pramāṇaṃ kṛṣṇo dhūmro nīlam athāsya madhyam | raktaṃ punaḥ sahātaraṃ sukhaṃ tu hāridravarṇaṃ susukhaṃ ca śuklam ||

Bhīṣma berkata: Bayangkan semua sumur-berundak itu selebar lima ratus yojana, sepanjang lima ratus yojana, dan sedalam satu krośa; sedemikian dalam hingga tak seorang pun dapat memasukinya. Maksudnya: tiap sumur amat luas dan amat dalam; dan dari salah satu sumur itu pun, seorang anak sepanjang hari hanya mampu menimba air dengan ujung tangannya satu kali saja, tidak untuk kedua kalinya. Dengan cara menimba demikian, waktu yang diperlukan hingga air semua sumur itu habis—pada waktu itulah rangkaian penciptaan dan peleburan makhluk pun dapat berakhir. Artinya, sebagaimana mustahil sumur-sumur itu kering dengan cara demikian, demikian pula mustahil memutus samsāra tanpa pengetahuan sejati. Lagi pula, makhluk disebut memiliki enam ‘tipe warna’ (varṇa): hitam, kelabu-asap, biru, merah, kuning-kunyit, dan putih. Hitam, kelabu-asap, dan biru berhubungan dengan kebahagiaan yang sedang; merah lebih dapat ditanggung; kuning menyenangkan; dan putih paling luhur serta paling membahagiakan.

Educational Q&A
