Śaṅkha–Likhita Upākhyāna: Daṇḍa, Confession, and the Purification of Kingship (शङ्ख-लिखितोपाख्यानम्)
वृत्तं यस्य श्लाघनीयं मनुष्या: सन््तो विद्वांसो$र्हयन्त्यर्हणीयम् । स्वर्ग जित्वा वीरलोकानवाप्य सिद्धि प्राप्त: पुण्यकीर्तिर्महात्मा
vṛttaṃ yasya ślāghanīyaṃ manuṣyāḥ santaḥ vidvāṃso 'rhayanty arhaṇīyam | svargaṃ jitvā vīralokān avāpya siddhiṃ prāptaḥ puṇyakīrtir mahātmā ||
Vaiśampāyana berkata: “Perilakunya patut dipuji; orang-orang saleh dan berilmu senantiasa memuliakan apa yang layak dimuliakan padanya. Setelah menaklukkan surga dan mencapai alam yang dianugerahkan bagi para pahlawan, ia—yang masyhur dengan kemuliaan suci—telah meraih kesempurnaan tertinggi.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
True honor arises from praiseworthy character (vṛtta). When conduct is ethically exemplary, the virtuous and learned naturally revere it; such merit is portrayed as leading to exalted posthumous attainment (svarga, vīraloka) and ‘siddhi’—a culminating fulfillment.
Vaiśaṃpāyana is describing a noble figure whose life and reputation are celebrated by good and wise people. The verse concludes that this person has ‘won heaven’ and reached the heroic realms, indicating the completion of his life’s moral and heroic trajectory with a superior final attainment.
