Gratitude, Discernment, and the Escalation of Power (Śvā–Dvipī–Vyāghra–Nāga–Siṃha–Śarabha Itihāsa)
तस्यर्षेरुपविष्टस्थ पादमूले महामते । मनुष्यवद्गतो भावो स्नेहबद्धों& भवद् भूशम्
tasyarṣer upaviṣṭastha-pādamūle mahāmate | manuṣyavad gato bhāvo sneha-baddho ’bhavad bhūśam ||
Bhishma berkata: “Wahai orang bijak, ketika anjing itu duduk di kaki sang resi agung, timbullah dalam dirinya perasaan seperti manusia. Terikat erat oleh kasih sayang, ia menjadi sangat lekat kepada sang resi.”
भीष्म उवाच
Even an animal can develop refined, ‘human-like’ affection through proximity to a virtuous person; the verse highlights the moral power of saintly association and the binding force of sneha (attachment).
A dog sits near a great sage’s feet and, through that closeness, becomes intensely attached to him, experiencing a disposition comparable to human affection.
