Bhīma’s Rebuttal of Yudhiṣṭhira’s Renunciatory Inclination
यथा<55रुह्मु महावृक्षमपह्त्य ततो मधु । अप्राश्य निधन गच्छेत् कर्मेदे नस्तथोपमम्,जैसे कोई विशाल वृक्षपर आरूढ़ हो वहाँसे मधु उतार लाये परंतु उसे खानेके पूर्व ही उसकी मृत्यु हो जाय; हमारा यह प्रयत्न भी वैसा ही हो रहा है इति श्रीमहाभारते शान्तिपर्वणि राजधर्मानुशासनपर्वणि भीमवाक्ये दशमो< ध्याय: ।।
Bhīma uvāca — yathāruhyā mahāvṛkṣam apahṛtya tato madhu | aprāśya nidhanaṁ gacchet karmedaṁ nas tathopamam ||
Seperti seseorang yang memanjat pohon raksasa, menurunkan madu darinya, namun mati sebelum sempat mengecapnya—demikian pula upaya kita kini: buahnya telah diraih, tetapi kita terputus sebelum menikmatinya.
भीम उवाच
Bhima highlights the fragility of human plans: even when one secures the ‘sweet fruit’ of effort, death or misfortune can intervene before enjoyment. The verse underscores impermanence and the ethical need to act with awareness that outcomes are uncertain.
In the Rajadharma instruction context of the Shanti Parva, Bhima voices a lament using a vivid simile: like someone who retrieves honey from a tall tree but dies before tasting it, their current endeavor seems to yield no lived benefit—suggesting frustration that hard-won gains are slipping away.
