The verse underscores that large-scale violence and the rise of adharma are mirrored by ‘cosmic’ unease: ominous natural signs function as a moral commentary, warning that unrighteous conflict disturbs the order of the world.
Sañjaya reports terrifying portents on the battlefield: thunderous winds, dust falling like rain, and darkness covering all directions—an atmosphere of dread foreshadowing calamity in the war.
