Duryodhana’s Final Condition, Lamentation, and the Night’s Report
वैशम्पायन उवाच इति श्रुत्वा स नृपतिः पुत्रस्य निधनं तदा । नि:श्वस्य दीर्घमुष्णं च ततश्चिन्तापरो5 भवत्
vaiśampāyana uvāca: iti śrutvā sa nṛpatiḥ putrasya nidhanaṃ tadā | niḥśvasya dīrgham uṣṇaṃ ca tataś cintāparo 'bhavat ||
Vaiśampāyana berkata: Mendengar demikian, sang raja—ketika mengetahui kematian putranya—menghela napas panjang yang panas, lalu tenggelam dalam kecemasan yang menggerogoti.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights the inevitability of sorrow as a consequence of war and attachment: even a king who is not on the battlefield is pierced by the results of violence through familial bonds and moral responsibility.
Vaiśampāyana narrates that Dhṛtarāṣṭra, upon hearing the report of his son’s death, exhales a long, burning sigh and becomes overwhelmed with anxious grief.
