Adhyāya 6: Śibira-dvāra-sthita Bhūta-varṇana and Aśvatthāmā’s Śaraṇāgati to Mahādeva

इस प्रकार श्रीमह्ाभारत सौप्तिकपर्वमें अश्वत्थामाका प्रयाणविषयक पाँचवाँ अध्याय पूरा हुआ

bāhubhiḥ svāyataiḥ pīnair nānā-praharaṇodyataiḥ | baddhājad-mahāsarpa-jvālā-mālākulānanam ||

Sañjaya berkata: Di sana ia melihat sesosok makhluk raksasa nan ajaib, bercahaya laksana matahari dan bulan, berdiri sebagai penjaga di ambang pintu, menghadang jalan. Sekadar memandangnya membuat bulu roma berdiri. Ia mengenakan kulit harimau yang basah oleh darah, berselimut kulit kijang hitam, dan menjadikan ular-ular sebagai yajñopavīta (tali suci). Lengan-lengannya yang besar dan tebal tampak terangkat, siap menghantam dengan beragam senjata; sebagai pengganti gelang lengan, ular-ular raksasa terikat melilit. Mulutnya menganga, seakan dipenuhi untaian nyala api; wajahnya kian mengerikan oleh taring-taring yang menonjol. Dihiasi ribuan mata yang ganjil, sosok menggentarkan itu berdiri menutup jalan.
