Aśvatthāman’s Curse, Parikṣit’s Future, and the Mani’s Restitution
विचरिष्यसि पापात्मन् सर्वव्याधिसमन्वित: । ओ नीच! तू जनसमुदायमें नहीं ठहर सकेगा। तेरे शरीरसे पीव और लोहूकी दुर्गन््ध निकलती रहेगी; अतः तुझे दुर्गम स्थानोंका ही आश्रय लेना पड़ेगा। पापात्मन्! तू सभी रोगोंसे पीड़ित होकर इधर-उधर भटकेगा
vicarīṣyasi pāpātman sarvavyādhisamanvitaḥ |
Wahai yang berhati dosa, engkau akan mengembara ke sana kemari, ditimpa segala penyakit. Engkau takkan sanggup tinggal di tengah orang banyak; dari tubuhmu akan terus keluar bau busuk nan menjijikkan—bau nanah dan darah—maka engkau akan terpaksa berlindung di tempat-tempat sunyi dan sukar dijangkau.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Grave wrongdoing in war—especially acts that violate accepted codes—invites karmic retribution: social exclusion, bodily suffering, and a life of restless wandering, showing that adharma destroys both reputation and well-being.
In the aftermath of the night-raid episode of the Sauptika Parva, a pronouncement is reported by Vaiśampāyana describing the offender’s fate: he will be unable to live among people and will roam in misery, afflicted by diseases and foul bodily decay.
