पतड्डग्निसमां वृत्तिमास्थायात्मविनाशिनीम् । न्यायतो युध्यमानस्य प्राणत्यागो न संशय:,“इधर मैंने राजा दुर्योधनके समीप पाण्डवोंके वधकी प्रतिज्ञा कर ली है। परंतु यह कार्य वैसा ही है, जैसा पतिंगोंका आगमें कूद पड़ना। मैंने जिस वृत्तिका आश्रय लेकर पूर्वोक्त प्रतिज्ञा की है, वह मेरा ही विनाश करनेवाली है। इसमें संदेह नहीं कि यदि मैं न््यायके अनुसार युद्ध करूँगा तो मुझे अपने प्राणोंका परित्याग करना पड़ेगा
pataṅgāgnisamāṁ vṛttim āsthāyātmavināśinīm | nyāyato yudhyamānasya prāṇatyāgo na saṁśayaḥ ||
Dengan menempuh jalan yang seperti ngengat terjun ke api—jalan yang membawa kebinasaanku sendiri—tak ada keraguan: bila aku bertempur menurut keadilan dan dharma perang, aku harus menyerahkan nyawaku.
