Escalation of Wagers and Shakuni’s Repeated Declarations of Victory
मनोज्ञमशनं भुक्त्वा विविशु: शरणान्यथ । तदनन्तर वे नरश्रेष्ठ पाण्डव द्रौपदी आदि अपनी स्त्रियोंसे बातचीत करके पहले व्यायाम एवं केश-प्रसाधन आदि कार्य किया। तदनन्तर नित्यकर्म करके सबने अपनेको दिव्य चन्दन आदिसे विभूषित किया। तत्पश्चात् मनमें कल्याणकी भावना रखनेवाले पाण्डव ब्राह्मणोंसे स्वस्तिवाचन कराकर मनो$नुकूल भोजन करनेके पश्चात् शयनगृहमें गये
manojñam aśanaṃ bhuktvā viviśuḥ śaraṇāny atha | tad-anantaraṃ vai naraśreṣṭha pāṇḍavā draupadī-ādyāḥ strībhiḥ saha saṃbhāṣya pūrvaṃ vyāyāmaṃ keśa-prasādhanaṃ ca cakruḥ | tataḥ nitya-karmāṇi kṛtvā sarve divya-candana-ādibhir vibhūṣitāḥ | tataś ca manasi kalyāṇa-bhāvanāṃ dhārayantaḥ pāṇḍavā brāhmaṇebhyaḥ svasti-vācanaṃ kārayitvā mano'nukūla-bhojanaṃ kṛtvā śayana-gṛhaṃ jagmuḥ ||
Vaiśampāyana berkata: Setelah menyantap hidangan yang menyenangkan, mereka memasuki kediaman masing-masing. Kemudian, wahai yang terbaik di antara manusia, para Pāṇḍava—bersama Draupadī dan para wanita mereka—bercakap-cakap, lalu terlebih dahulu berlatih dan menata rambut serta perhiasan. Sesudah menunaikan kewajiban harian, semuanya mengoleskan cendana ilahi dan wewangian lainnya. Setelah itu, dengan niat yang membawa keberkahan di hati, para Pāṇḍava meminta para brāhmaṇa melantunkan doa restu, menyantap makanan yang berkenan, lalu masuk ke kamar peraduan.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The passage highlights disciplined, dharmic household conduct: completing daily duties (nitya-karman), maintaining personal cleanliness and decorum, and seeking Brahminical blessings (svasti-vācana) before rest—suggesting that auspicious intention and orderly routine support ethical life.
After a satisfying meal, the Pāṇḍavas retire to their quarters. Draupadī and the women attend to conversation and grooming; everyone performs daily rites, applies fragrant sandalwood, receives benedictions from Brahmins, eats congenial food, and then goes to the bedchambers.
