Dyūta-kathā-praśnaḥ — Inquiry into the Dice-Game Calamity
कृतमड़लकल्याणो भ्रातृभि: परिवारित: । गतेषु क्षत्रियेन्द्रेषु सर्वेषु भरतर्षभ
Vaiśampāyana uvāca |
Kṛtamaṅgalakalyāṇo bhrātṛbhiḥ parivāritaḥ |
Gateṣu kṣatriyendreṣu sarveṣu bharatarṣabha ||
Vaiśampāyana berkata: Setelah semua raja Kṣatriya terkemuka berangkat, wahai yang terbaik di antara keturunan Bharata, Raja Yudhiṣṭhira—sesudah menuntaskan upacara-upacara yang membawa berkah dan dikelilingi para saudaranya—memasuki kotanya yang mulia bersama para menteri. Namun Duryodhana dan Śakuni, putra Subala, tetap tinggal di balairung sidang yang elok itu—sebuah jeda yang ganjil setelah seremoni, seakan menyingkap niat batin yang tak sejalan dengan tata lahiriah.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse contrasts outward dharmic order—completing auspicious rites and returning properly with one’s kin and counselors—with the lingering presence of those driven by envy and calculation. It suggests that ethical life is not only public ritual and decorum, but also vigilance about intentions and the company one keeps.
After the gathering of kings disperses, Yudhiṣṭhira, having finished the ceremonial observances, returns to his city accompanied by his brothers and ministers. Meanwhile, Duryodhana and Śakuni stay back in the assembly-hall, setting the stage for the next developments in the Sabhā episode.
