Duryodhana’s Humiliation in the Hall of Māyā
* 53 है ०५ >> 5555 वैकृतं तस्य तौ दृष्टवा त्यागायाकुरुतां मतिम्,इससे इसके माता-पिता अन्य भाई-बन्धुओंसहित भयसे थर्रा उठे। इसकी वह विकराल आकृति देख उन्होंने इसे त्याग देनेका निश्चय किया
vaikṛtaṃ tasya tau dṛṣṭvā tyāgāyākurutāṃ matim | asya mātā-pitarau anyabhrātṛ-bandhubhiḥ saha bhayāt tharatharāyām āsa | tasya vikārālaṃ rūpaṃ dṛṣṭvā tau enaṃ tyaktum niścayaṃ cakratuḥ ||
Melihat wujudnya yang ganjil dan mengerikan, orang tuanya—bersama saudara dan kerabat—gemetar ketakutan dan memutuskan untuk menelantarkannya.
भीष्म उवाच
The verse foregrounds an ethical tension: fear and aversion to perceived deformity can eclipse familial responsibility (dharma). It invites reflection on compassion, protection of the vulnerable, and the moral cost of rejection driven by stigma.
Bhishma narrates that the child’s frightening, abnormal appearance causes his parents and extended family to panic; the parents then decide to abandon the child.
