भीममुग्र॑ महात्मानं त्र्यक्ष॑ शर्व॑ कपर्दिनम्
sañjaya uvāca—bhīmam ugraṃ mahātmānaṃ tryakṣaṃ śarvaṃ kapardinam | anye janā na paśyanti, tasya yoddhuṃ kutaḥ punaḥ || parantu tvaṃ sarvabhūtahitāya taṃ sthāṇusvarūpaṃ mahādevaṃ sākṣād bhagavantaṃ śivaṃ yuddhenaivārādhitavān | anyair api devaiḥ te varadānāni dattāni | tasmāt mahābāho pārtha, devādhidevaṃ triśūladharaṃ śaṅkaraṃ prasādya karṇaṃ tathā jahi, yathā vṛtravināśaka indro namuciṃ jaghāna | kuntīnandana, tava sadā kalyāṇaṃ bhavatu; yuddhe jayaṃ prāpnuhi ||
Sañjaya berkata: “Ia—yang dahsyat dan menggetarkan, Mahātma, bermata tiga, Śarva, sang berjambul kusut—bahkan tak dapat dipandang oleh makhluk biasa; apalagi dibicarakan untuk diperangi. Namun engkau telah memuja Mahādeva itu—Śiva sendiri, yang teguh laksana Sthāṇu—melalui pertempuran demi kesejahteraan semua makhluk. Para dewa lain pun telah menganugerahkan karunia kepadamu. Maka, wahai Pārtha yang berlengan perkasa, dengan rahmat Śaṅkara, Dewa di atas para dewa, pemegang trisula, tewaskanlah Karṇa sebagaimana Indra, pembunuh Vṛtra, menewaskan Namuci. Wahai putra Kuntī, semoga engkau senantiasa diberkahi; raihlah kemenangan dalam perang ini.”
संजय उवाच
The verse frames righteous victory as grounded not merely in force but in alignment with divine order: awe before the transcendent (Śiva), devotion expressed through disciplined action, and the ethical aim of sarvabhūtahita (the welfare of all beings). Boons and grace are presented as supports for dharmic action rather than substitutes for it.
Sañjaya encourages Arjuna (Pārtha) before the climactic struggle with Karna. He recalls Arjuna’s prior propitiation of Śiva and the boons received from the gods, then urges him to slay Karna by Śiva’s grace, comparing it to Indra’s legendary killing of the demon Namuci.
