The verse highlights how fear and loss can break collective resolve, and how armies often seek stability by rallying around a strong leader. Ethically, it underscores the Kṣatriya ideal of steadfastness in battle, while also showing the human tendency to seek protection when overwhelmed.
Bhīma is striking down the Kaurava forces so fiercely that Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s sons turn away from the fight. They then move toward Karṇa and stand around him on all sides, regrouping under his command and protection in the ongoing battle.
