Krishna’s Counsel, Arjuna’s Apology, and Authorization for Karṇa’s Slaying

The verse underscores how, in war, intention (icchā) and resolve can harden into a death-driven focus; the imagery of a 'second staff of Death' highlights the ethical gravity of violence and the inevitability of mortality when dharma collapses into total war.
Sanjaya describes Bhima, roaring with power and intent, seizing a gold-inlaid iron club (parigha) and striking at Karna; the weapon’s descent is compared to the sound and force of thunderbolt and lightning.
