Karṇa’s Pressure on the Pāñcālas; Duryodhana Disabled; Arjuna’s Counter-Advance

अतत्त्वां कथये कर्ण निदर्शनमिदं पुनः । सम और विषम अवस्था

sañjaya uvāca |

avaśyaṃ kathaye karṇa nidarśanam idaṃ punaḥ |

sama-viṣamāvasthā, rathinaḥ prabalatā ca nirbalatā ca, rathena saha hayānāṃ satata-pariśramaḥ kleśaś ca, astrāṇi santi na vā—iti jñānam, jaya-parājaya-sūcanāṃ paśu-pakṣi-bhāṣā, bhāraḥ atibhāraś ca, śalya-cikitsā, astraprayogaḥ, yuddhaṃ ca śubhāśubha-nimittāni—etāḥ sarvāḥ kathāḥ jñātum mama āvaśyakam; yato 'haṃ asya rathasya ekaḥ kuṭumbī |

karṇa! tasmāt punaḥ tvāṃ prati asya dṛṣṭāntasya varṇanaṃ karomi ||

vaiśyaḥ kila samudrānte prabhūta-dhana-dhānyavān rājño dharma-pradhānasya rāṣṭre vasati nirbhayaḥ |

sa yajña-yāgādi-kartā dānapatiḥ kṣamāśīlaḥ sva-varṇānukūla-karmaṇi tatparaḥ pavitraḥ bahu-putravān santāna-premī sarva-prāṇi-dayāvān ca |

Sañjaya berkata: “Wahai Karna, akan kuceritakan lagi perumpamaan ini. Karena aku termasuk orang dalam rumah tangga kereta ini, bagiku perlu mengetahui segala hal yang menandai berhasil atau gagalnya perang: keadaan tanah yang rata atau tidak rata, kuat atau lemahnya sang kesatria-kereta, jerih payah dan derita kuda-kuda yang tiada putus bersama sang kesatria, ada atau tidaknya persenjataan, suara binatang dan burung yang meramalkan menang atau kalah, beban yang wajar dan beban yang berlebihan, pengobatan luka, pemakaian senjata, tata laksana pertempuran, serta pertanda baik dan buruk. Maka, wahai Karna, kuceritakan kembali contoh ini kepadamu. “Konon, di tepi laut, dalam kerajaan seorang raja yang berpusat pada dharma, hiduplah seorang waisya, saudagar yang kaya harta dan gandum, dan ia tinggal tanpa rasa takut. Ia melaksanakan yajña dan upacara, dermawannya termasyhur, sabar dan pemaaf, teguh pada kewajiban sesuai varna-nya, suci perilakunya, dikaruniai banyak putra, menyayangi keturunannya, dan berbelas kasih kepada semua makhluk hidup.”
