The verse foregrounds the authority of ancient precedent: Duryodhana urges attentive listening and discourages doubt, showing how speakers in the epic use revered past events to persuade and to frame present decisions in war.
Duryodhana addresses Śalya (king of Madra) and begins recounting an ancient episode from the devas–asuras conflict, setting up a larger mythic narrative (leading into the Tripura-related account) to influence the listener’s mindset.
