Chapter 1
एतनमे सर्वमाचक्ष्व विस्तरेण महामुने । न हि तृप्यामि पूर्वेषां शुण्वानश्वरितं महत्,महामुने! यह सारा वृत्तान्त आप मुझसे विस्तारपूर्वक कहें। मैं अपने पूर्वजोंका महान् चरित्र सुनकर तृप्त नहीं हो रहा हूँ
etan me sarvam ācakṣva vistareṇa mahāmune | na hi tṛpyāmi pūrveṣāṃ śṛṇvānāś caritaṃ mahat ||
Janamejaya berkata: “Wahai mahāmuni, ceritakanlah semuanya ini kepadaku dengan selengkap-lengkapnya. Sebab aku tak pernah merasa puas mendengar laku mulia dan agung para leluhurku.”
जनमेजय उवाच
The verse highlights śravaṇa (reverent listening) as a means of moral and cultural formation: the listener seeks detailed narration of ancestral exemplars, implying that remembering and hearing noble lives sustains values and guides conduct.
King Janamejaya urges the sage to continue the Mahābhārata account with fuller detail, expressing that he remains unsated by hearing the great deeds and character of his forefathers.
