Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how war draws in diverse peoples and mercenary or frontier forces, emphasizing the moral complexity of conflict: power-seeking leadership can mobilize many groups, but sheer numbers and weaponry do not resolve the ethical burden of violence.

Sañjaya describes to Dhṛtarāṣṭra the composition of the opposing forces: various non-Kuru groups—Śakas, Kirātas, Daradas, Barbaras, Tāmrāliptakas, and other mlecchas—stand armed with many kinds of weapons, aligned under Duryodhana and ready to fight.
