Droṇa-parva 112: Karṇa–Bhīma Engagement and Duryodhana’s Protective Order
sañjaya uvāca | ajātaśatruḥ kaunteyaḥ sātvataṃ pratyabhāṣata | bāṣpa-gadgadayā vācā muhā-māno muhur muhuḥ | kṛtyasyānantara-apekṣī śaineyaṃ śini-puṅgavam ||
Even a righteous leader like Yudhiṣṭhira can be shaken by crisis, yet dharma in wartime demands steadiness and timely action. The verse highlights the ethical pressure of responsibility: compassion and grief are human, but duty requires decisive support of capable allies to prevent greater harm.
Sañjaya narrates that Yudhiṣṭhira, distressed and tearful, repeatedly losing composure, urgently speaks to Sātyaki (the foremost Śini warrior). He is anxious that the immediate mission—ensuring the completion of the critical task connected with Jayadratha’s slaying—be accomplished without delay.
