तमेक॑ छादयामासुर्मेघा इव दिवाकरम् । भीष्म भागीरथीपुत्र प्रतपन्तं रणे रिपून्,परंतप! जैसे बादल सूर्यको ढक लेते हैं, उसी प्रकार उन वीरोंने पैदल, घुड़सवार तथा रथियोंके समुदायसे एवं बहुसंख्यक बाणोंद्वारा भीष्मको आच्छादित कर दिया। उस समय गंगानन्दन भीष्म अकेले युद्धके मैदानमें शत्रुओंको अत्यन्त संतप्त कर रहे थे

Sanjaya berkata: Laksana awan menutupi matahari, demikianlah para pahlawan itu menyelubungi Bhishma seorang diri. Namun Bhishma, putra Bhagirathi (Gangga), berdiri sendirian di medan laga dan terus membakar musuh—wahai penakluk lawan.
