Bhīṣma’s Fall to the Arrow-Bed
इसी प्रकार भीष्मपर चढ़ाई करनेवाले सहदेवको शरद्वानके पुत्र कृपाचार्यने सामने आकर रोका, मानो वनमें किसी मतवाले हाथीपर मदोनन््मत्त गजराजने आक्रमण किया हो ।। कृपश्च समरे शूरो माद्रीपुत्रं महारथम् । आजयपघान शरैस्तूर्ण सप्तत्या रुक्मभूषणै:,शूरवीर कृपाचार्यने समरभूमिमें महारथी माद्रीकुमार सहदेवको सुवर्णभूषित सत्तर बाणोंसे तुरंत घायल कर दिया
sañjaya uvāca | evaṃ bhīṣmaparaṃ cāḍhāya pravṛttam sahadevaṃ śaradvataputraḥ kṛpācāryaḥ samāgamya nyavārayat, yathā vane mattaṃ gajaṃ prati madonmatto gajarājaḥ pradhāvati || kṛpaś ca samare śūro mādrīputraṃ mahāratham | ājau jaghāna śarais tūrṇaṃ saptatyā rukmabhūṣaṇaiḥ ||
Sañjaya berkata: Demikianlah, ketika Sahadeva maju untuk menyerbu Bhīṣma, Kṛpācārya putra Śaradvat tampil menghadang dan menahan lajunya, laksana gajah perkasa yang sedang musth menerjang gajah lain di rimba. Lalu Kṛpa yang gagah di medan laga dengan cepat menghantam Sahadeva—putra Mādrī, sang mahāratha—dengan tujuh puluh anak panah berhias emas, hingga ia terluka.
संजय उवाच
The verse highlights battlefield dharma as disciplined resistance and measured prowess: a warrior’s advance is met by an equally responsible counter-force, emphasizing that courage is paired with restraint, skill, and duty-bound opposition rather than uncontrolled violence.
As Sahadeva moves forward to attack Bhīṣma, Kṛpācārya steps in to block him. Kṛpa then quickly wounds Sahadeva with seventy gold-adorned arrows, checking Sahadeva’s momentum and shifting the immediate tactical situation.
