Brahma-vidyā: Satya–Tapas and the Enumeration of Tattvas
Arjuna–Vāsudeva framed dialogue
अव्यक्तबीजप्रभवो बुद्धिस्कन्धमयो महान् । महाहड्कारविटप इन्द्रियाड्कुरकोटर:
avyaktabījaprabhavo buddhiskandhamayo mahān | mahāhaṅkāraviṭapa indriyāṅkurakoṭaraḥ | chittvā cāmaratāṁ prāpya jahāti mṛtyujanmanī ||
Vāyu bersabda: “Pohon besar bernama tubuh ini berawal dari benih yang tak termanifest; batangnya adalah buddhi (intelek), cabangnya adalah maha-ahaṅkāra (rasa-aku yang besar), dan rongga-rongganya adalah indria. Barang siapa memahami hakikatnya dengan tepat lalu menebangnya dengan pedang pengetahuan yang unggul, ia meraih keabadian dan meninggalkan belenggu kelahiran serta kematian.”
वायुदेव उवाच
Embodied life is compared to a tree rooted in an unmanifest cause, structured by buddhi, ahaṅkāra, and the senses. Liberation comes when one understands this construction and ‘cuts’ attachment to it through discriminative knowledge, thereby transcending the cycle of birth and death.
Vāyudeva is instructing the listener with a philosophical allegory: the body and worldly existence are mapped as a tree. The point is not botanical description but a practical soteriology—know the constituents of experience and sever identification with them to attain deathlessness.
