Shloka 21

Mokṣa-dharma Yoga-Upadeśa: Equanimity, Sense-Restraint, and Vision of the Ātman (आत्मदर्शन-योगोपदेशः)

जो साधक सदा संयमपरायण, योगयुक्त, मनको वशमें करनेवाला और जितेन्द्रिय है, वही आत्मासे प्रेरित होकर बुद्धिके द्वारा उसका साक्षात्कार कर सकता है ।।

yo sādhakaḥ sadā saṁyamaparāyaṇaḥ, yogayuktaḥ, manasaḥ vaśaṁ kartā jitendriyaś ca, sa evātmā-preritaḥ buddhyā tasya sākṣātkāraṁ kartum arhati. yathā hi puruṣaḥ svapne dṛṣṭvā paśyaty asāv iti, tathā rūpam iva ātmānaṁ sādhuyuktaḥ prapaśyati.

Sang brāhmaṇa berkata: Hanya pelaku laku rohani yang senantiasa berpaut pada pengendalian diri, teguh dalam yoga, mampu menundukkan batin, dan menaklukkan indria—dialah yang, digerakkan dari dalam oleh Ātman, dapat menyadari Itu melalui daya budi. Sebagaimana seseorang, setelah melihat dalam mimpi, seakan memandangnya sambil berkata “itulah dia”, demikian pula yogin yang terlatih memandang Ātman seolah-olah berwujud.

Educational Q&A

Direct realization of the Self is possible for the disciplined practitioner: one devoted to restraint, steady in yoga, controlling mind and senses. Such realization arises from inner prompting (ātma-prerita) and is grasped through discriminative intellect (buddhi), not through mere external ritual or speculation.

A Brahmin speaker instructs on the means of Self-knowledge. He uses a dream-analogy: as dream-objects appear vividly ‘as if present,’ so the yogin, properly composed, perceives the Self ‘as if with form’—a pedagogical way to describe an inward, immediate experience that transcends ordinary perception.
