धृतराष्ट्र-सत्कारः तथा श्राद्ध-दाने नियमनम् | Honoring Dhṛtarāṣṭra and Regulating Śrāddha-Gifts

राजानमनुवर्तन्तं धर्मपुत्रममित्रहा । अन्ववर्तत कौरव्यो हृदयेन पराड्मुख:,विपरीतकश्न मे शत्रुर्नियम्यश्न भवेन्नर: । राजा युधिष्ठिर बड़े दयालु थे। वे सदा प्रसन्न रहकर अपने भाइयों और मन्त्रियोंसे कहा करते थे कि “ये राजा धृतराष्ट्र मेरे और आपलोगोंके माननीय हैं। जो इनकी आज्ञाके अधीन रहता है, वही मेरा सुहृद्‌ है। विपरीत आचरण करनेवाला मेरा शत्रु है। वह मेरे दण्डका भागी होगा धर्मपुत्र राजा युधिष्ठिरको धृतराष्ट्रके अनुकूल बर्ताव करते देख शत्रुसूदन कुरुनन्दन भीमसेन स्वयं भी ऊपरसे उनका अनुसरण ही करते थे, तथापि उनका हृदय धृतराष्ट्रसे विमुख ही रहता था

vaiśampāyana uvāca |

rājānam anuvartantaṃ dharmaputram amitrahā |

anvavartata kauravyo hṛdayena parāṅmukhaḥ ||

viparītakaś ca me śatrur niyamyaś ca bhaven naraḥ ||

Waiśampāyana berkata: Melihat Dharmaputra Yudhiṣṭhira, penakluk musuh, bersikap hormat dan menyesuaikan diri kepada Raja Dhṛtarāṣṭra, pahlawan Kuru Bhīmasena pun secara lahiriah mengikuti jalan itu; namun dalam hatinya ia tetap berpaling dari Dhṛtarāṣṭra. Sebab Yudhiṣṭhira telah menyatakan: “Dhṛtarāṣṭra patut dihormati olehku dan oleh kalian semua. Siapa yang berada di bawah perintahnya adalah sahabatku; siapa yang bertindak berlawanan adalah musuhku—ia akan ditahan dan dihukum.”

Educational Q&A

Ethical governance distinguishes between loyalty to rightful authority and opposition to it: Yudhiṣṭhira frames obedience to the honored elder-king as the mark of a well-wisher, while deliberate contrariness becomes enmity deserving restraint. The verse also highlights the moral tension between outward discipline and inward feeling—Bhīma conforms externally, yet his heart remains unwilling.

In the aftermath of the great war, Yudhiṣṭhira treats Dhṛtarāṣṭra with honor and aligns his conduct with the elder king’s wishes. Observing this, Bhīma also follows suit in behavior, but he cannot reconcile inwardly and remains emotionally turned away from Dhṛtarāṣṭra.
