Educational Q&A

The line underscores a simple ethical motif often used in Mahābhārata narratives: seeking proper shelter and restraint in movement—symbolically, choosing the ‘shade’ of protection and propriety rather than exposure to danger or impropriety.

Bhīṣma describes a woman proceeding on her way; she keeps to the shade by taking refuge near a tree, a brief scene-setting detail that situates her movement and condition.
