Chatra–Upānah Dāna: Origin Narrative
Jamadagni–Reṇukā–Sūrya Saṃvāda
विश्वामित्र उवाच करोतु भृतको<वर्षा राज्ञश्नास्तु पुरोहित: । ऋषच्विगस्तु हायाज्यस्य यस्ते हरति पुष्करम्
viśvāmitra uvāca—karotu bhṛtako ’varṣā rājñaḥ syān nāstu purohitaḥ | ṛtvig astu hy ayājyasya yaste harati puṣkaram ||
Viśvāmitra berkata: “Barangsiapa mencuri padmamu, biarlah ia menjadi buruh upahan namun justru menghalangi turunnya hujan di ladang tuannya. Biarlah ia menjadi purohita raja, dan juga menjadi ṛtvij bagi orang yang tak layak dipersembahkan yajña—hingga ia turut menanggung akibat dosa-dosa itu.”
विश्वामित्र उवाच
The verse warns that wrongdoing (theft) and religious misconduct (serving as priest for an unqualified sacrificer) generate grave karmic consequences. It also highlights that ritual roles like purohita and ṛtvij carry ethical responsibility; misusing them makes one a participant in sin.
Viśvāmitra pronounces a punitive imprecation against the person who stole a lotus: despite becoming a servant, he will cause drought; despite attaining respected priestly positions, he will be tainted by officiating improper sacrifices, thereby sharing in their demerit.
