Chatra–Upānah Dāna: Origin Narrative
Jamadagni–Reṇukā–Sūrya Saṃvāda
ऋषय: समेता: पश्चिमे वै प्रभासे समागता मन्त्रममन्त्रयन्त । चराम सर्वा पृथिवीं पुण्यतीर्था तन्न: काम॑ हन्त गच्छाम सर्वे
ṛṣayaḥ sametāḥ paścime vai prabhāse samāgatā mantram amantrayanta | carāma sarvāṃ pṛthivīṃ puṇyatīrthāṃ tan naḥ kāmaḥ—hanta gacchāma sarve ||
Bhishma berkata: “Di wilayah barat, di tirtha Prabhāsa, banyak resi berkumpul. Setelah berhimpun, mereka bermusyawarah: ‘Marilah kita mengembara ke seluruh bumi yang dipenuhi tirtha-tirtha suci. Itulah hasrat kita bersama; ayolah, kita semua berangkat.’”
भीष्म उवाच
The verse highlights a dharmic ideal: seeking purification and moral clarity through collective pilgrimage to sacred places, undertaken with shared intention and mutual counsel.
A group of sages gathers at the western sacred site of Prabhāsa and, after deliberation, decides to begin a joint journey across the earth to visit many holy tīrthas.
