Chapter 84: Brahmā’s Counsel on Tāraka, the Search for Agni, and the Genesis of Skanda

येन देवा: पवित्रेण भुज्जते लोकमुत्तमम् । यत् पवित्र पवित्राणां तद् घृतं शिरसा वहेत्
yena devāḥ pavitreṇa bhuñjate lokam uttamam | yat pavitra pavitrāṇāṁ tad ghṛtaṁ śirasā vahet |
Vyāsa berkata: Dengan zat penyuci itulah para dewa menikmati dan menopang dunia-dunia tertinggi; dan ia adalah yang paling suci di antara segala yang suci—maka hendaknya ghee itu dijunjung di atas kepala sebagai tindakan hormat yang sakral.
व्यास उवाच
The verse elevates ghṛta (ghee) as a supremely purifying, sacred substance central to divine worship and yajña; it recommends honoring it with the highest bodily reverence (bearing it on the head), underscoring respect for ritual purity and the means by which dharma is sustained.
Vyāsa is speaking in a didactic context, praising the sanctity and purificatory power of ghee—linked with the gods’ enjoyment of offerings and the maintenance of higher realms—and prescribing a gesture of veneration toward it.
