Cyavana’s Yogic Display and Kuśika’s Recognition of Tapas

Educational Q&A

A ruler should not reduce a venerable person or a moral obligation to a cheap, fixed price; instead he must act with propriety (sadṛśa), fairness, and careful deliberation, consulting wise counsellors.

After Nahusha proposes a payment of one hundred thousand, Cyavana rejects being ‘priced’ at that amount and instructs the king to determine and pay an appropriate recompense after consulting his ministers.
