Adhyāya 152 — Bhīṣma’s Authorization for Yudhiṣṭhira’s Return to the Capital (नगरप्रवेशानुज्ञा)

जो पतिकी देवताके समान सेवा और परिचर्या करती हैं

yā patikī devatā-samāṃ sevāṃ paricaryāṃ ca karoti, patim ṛte ’nyasmin kasmiṃścid hārdikaṃ prema na karoti, kadācit na kupyati, uttama-vrataṃ ca pālayati; yasyā darśanaṃ pataye sukhadaṃ pratibhāti; yā putra-mukha-vat svāmi-mukhaṃ prati sadā niharati; yā sādhvī niyata-āhārā ca sā strī dharma-cāriṇī ucyate. śrutvā dāmpatya-dharmaṃ vai saha-dharma-kṛtaṃ śubham—“pati-patnyau ekatra sthitvā dharmācaraṇaṃ kartavyam” iti—yā bhavet dharma-paramā nārī bharta-sama-vratā sā pativratā.

Maheshvara menyatakan: seorang perempuan disebut pelaku dharma sejati bila ia melayani dan merawat suaminya laksana dewa, tidak menautkan kasih hatinya kepada siapa pun selain dia, tidak jatuh dalam amarah, dan setia pada laku-janji yang luhur. Kehadirannya menyenangkan suaminya; ia senantiasa menatap wajah tuannya dengan kasih yang mantap sebagaimana memandang wajah seorang anak; ia suci dan berdisiplin, dengan makan yang teratur. Setelah mendengar dharma pernikahan yang mujur ini—bahwa suami dan istri hendaknya hidup bersama dan menunaikan kebajikan sebagai dharma bersama—perempuan yang menjadi teguh dalam dharma dan menjalankan laku selaras dengan suaminya disebut pativratā, setia pada ikrar suami.
