त्रैविद्यो ब्राह्मणो विद्वानू न चाध्ययनजीवक: । त्रिकर्मा त्रिपरिक्रान्तो मैत्र एष स्मृतो द्विज:
traividyo brāhmaṇo vidvān na cādhyayanajīvakaḥ | trikarmā triparikrānto maitra eṣa smṛto dvijaḥ ||
Seseorang sungguh diingat sebagai brāhmaṇa—yakni yang “dua kali lahir”—bila ia berilmu dalam tiga Veda, tidak menjadikan mengajar atau melantunkan pelajaran sebagai mata pencaharian; senantiasa menunaikan tiga kewajiban suci (yajña, dāna, dan laku dharma); telah melampaui tiga musuh batin (kāma, krodha, lobha); serta memelihara sikap persahabatan terhadap semua makhluk.
