अपि चाह ं पुरा विप्रैर्वर्जितो गर्हितो वसे । परोपसेवां पापिष्ठां न च कुर्या धनेप्सया
api cāhaṃ purā viprair varjito garhito vase | paropasevāṃ pāpiṣṭhāṃ na ca kuryā dhanepsayā ||
Aku pun dahulu pernah hidup dijauhi dan dicela oleh para brahmana; namun demi menginginkan harta, aku tidak akan melakukan perbuatan paling berdosa: mengabdi kepada orang lain secara hina dan bergantung.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse warns that the pursuit of wealth should not drive one into morally degrading dependence or servile conduct; ethical integrity is to be preserved even at the cost of social hardship.
Vaiśampāyana reports a first-person reflection: the speaker recalls having once been rejected and criticized by brahmins, yet insists that even then he would not resort to the 'most sinful' kind of dependent service merely to obtain money.
