On the Causes/Means of Knowledge
Lord Vishnu (narrating to Garuda)
Concept: Realization can culminate in excellence and then ‘tirobhāva’ (withdrawal/concealment); knowledge of Hari’s guṇas—even for great beings like Umāpati—operates within the bounds of grace and adhikāra.
Vedantic Theme: Supremacy/inexhaustibility of Hari’s attributes; grace-governed knowledge; harmony of deities under the one supreme principle (Hari-tattva) as presented in Vaiṣṇava purāṇic theology.
Application: Honor multiple devotional lineages while keeping focus on the supreme object of devotion; accept phases of withdrawal after attainment (silence, inwardness) as part of maturation; seek grace through steady worship.
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Related Themes: Garuda Purana (general): Viṣṇu as refuge; praise of Viṣṇu’s names/qualities; occasional sectarian harmonization by placing other deities within Viṣṇu’s grace
The verse states that true knowledge of Hari’s qualities arises by the Lord’s prasāda—grace that makes even exalted beings like Śeṣa and Umāpati capable of knowing what is appropriate to know.
By using “svayogyān,” it indicates that realization is according to fitness and capacity; one knows the divine attributes in a manner suited to one’s spiritual preparedness, guided by grace.
Cultivate humility and steady devotion: seek understanding step-by-step according to capacity, and treat spiritual progress as grace-supported rather than ego-driven.
