Lord Vishnu (in instruction to Garuda/Vinata-putra)

Concept: Consciousness and mantra (Praṇava, Vyāhṛtis) have purificatory potency; inner organs are refined through sacred sound and intention.

Vedantic Theme: Śabda-brahman and antaḥkaraṇa-śuddhi: purification of mind/heart as prerequisite for higher realization.

Application: Use brief Oṁ + Vyāhṛti recitation (bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ) with mindful attention to calm and ‘clean’ the mind before prayer, study, or meditation.

Primary Rasa: adbhuta

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Type: ritual interior (body and altar-space)

Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.48 (śuddhi, nyāsa, mantra-prayoga)

FAQs

This verse states that purity can be effected both externally (ritual substances) and internally (heart and limbs) through sanctifying means—especially the Vyāhṛtis and Oṁ—highlighting mantra as a direct purifier in ritual discipline.

While not describing the after-death journey directly, it emphasizes inner purification of the heart, which the Garuda Purana repeatedly treats as foundational for dharma, proper rites, and a favorable post-mortem course.

Before prayers or ancestral rites, consciously purify intent: recite Oṁ (and, if known, the Vyāhṛtis) to steady the mind and treat offerings and actions as sacred, reducing ritual negligence and improving ethical focus.
