Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"List","entry_title":"Varṇa-vibhāga: puṭa, miśra, ūṣmāṇa, and antaḥstha (semivowel) extraction","lookup_keywords":["ūṣmāṇa","miśravarga","puṭa","antaḥstha","varṇa-samāmnāya"],"quick_summary":"Gives a classificatory key: a sixth class with eight subdivisions, a seventh mixed class, identifies sibilants as ūṣmāṇas, and instructs isolating the semivowels from the arrangement."}

Concept: Śabda is knowable through structured classes; separating ūṣmāṇa and antaḥstha is essential for accurate phonology and mantra phonetics.

Application: Create a learner’s table: vowels; sparśa-vargas; antaḥstha (ya ra la va); ūṣmāṇa (śa ṣa sa ha); and any mixed/compound categories used by the text’s scheme.

Khanda Section: Vyakarana (Sanskrit Grammar: Varna-samamnaya and Varga-classification)

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: adbhuta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A chart of Sanskrit sounds divided into classes: an eightfold subdivision block, a mixed block, a highlighted row for sibilants (ūṣmāṇa), and a separated set for semivowels (antaḥstha/manu).","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style wall-chart scene, large phonetic grid painted on plaster, sibilants highlighted with smoky motifs (ūṣmāṇa), teacher separating semivowels with a stylus, traditional attire","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting with ornate gold-bordered phonetic mandala-like chart, distinct compartments labeled puṭa/miśra/ūṣmāṇa/antaḥstha, rich jewel tones, devotional-scholar aesthetic","mysore_prompt":"Mysore style instructional plate, crisp grid layout, clear Devanagari labels, teacher demonstrating ‘uddhāra’ (extracting) semivowels from the table, minimal background","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature of a scribe-scholar preparing a phonetic table on paper, colored blocks for categories, fine calligraphy, scholarly studio setting"}

Sandhi Resolution Notes: षष्ठोऽष्टपुटसम्पन्नः = षष्ठः + अष्टपुटसम्पन्नः; मिश्रवर्गस्तु = मिश्रवर्गः + तु; स्याच्छ्वर्गः = स्यात् + श्वर्गः; उद्धरेच्च = उद्धरेत् + च

FAQs

It teaches a technical phonetic/grammatical taxonomy: identifying the mixed class (miśra-varga) and defining uṣmāṇas (the sibilant/breathy sounds), along with isolating the semi-vowels (antaḥsthas) within the letter-system.

Alongside ritual and dharma topics, the Agni Purana also preserves śikṣā-vyākaraṇa material—systematic classification of Sanskrit sounds—showing it functions as a compendium of practical sciences, including linguistic science used for correct recitation and textual transmission.

Correct identification and articulation of phonemes supports accurate mantra-recitation and Vedic/Puranic chanting, which is traditionally held to preserve meaning and efficacy, reducing error (doṣa) in sacred speech.
