मात्रालिङ्गपदं त्यक्त्वा शब्दव्यञ्जनवर्जितम् ।

अस्वरेण मकारेण पदं सूक्ष्मं च गच्छति ॥४॥

मात्रा-लिङ्ग-पदम् । त्यक्त्वा । शब्द-व्यञ्जन-वर्जितम् ।

अ-स्वरेण । म-कारेण । पदम् । सूक्ष्मम् । च । गच्छति ॥४॥

IAST Transliteration

mātrāliṅgapadaṃ tyaktvā śabdavyañjanavarjitam |

asvareṇa makāreṇa padaṃ sūkṣmaṃ ca gacchati ||4||

Translation

मात्रा और लिङ्ग से युक्त ‘पद’ को त्यागकर, वर्ण और व्यञ्जन-उच्चारण से रहित, स्वर-रहित ‘मकार’ द्वारा सूक्ष्म पद (अवस्था) को प्राप्त होता है।

Academic Translation

Abandoning the ‘word-state’ characterized by measures (mātrā) and signs (liṅga), devoid of phoneme and consonantal articulation, one proceeds to the subtle state by the ‘m’ (makāra) without vowel (asvara).
