कीर्तिप्रभंगे वृजिनं भविष्यति प्रजावधे यन्मनुराह सत्यम् । संमार्जयित्वा विमलं यशः स्वं कथं सुखी स्यां नृपते ततः क्षमः ॥ ८२ ॥

कीर्ति के भंग होने पर विपत्ति अवश्य आती है; और मनु ने सत्य कहा है कि प्रजा-वध महापाप है। यदि मैं अपनी निर्मल यशः को फिर से धो-पोंछकर भी स्थापित कर लूँ, तो उसके बाद मैं कैसे सुखी रहूँगा, हे नृपते? इसलिए मुझे क्षमा कीजिए और इस मार्ग पर न जाइए।
