Mātali’s Proposal for Guṇakeśī and Sumukha’s Audience with Indra
mātalir uvāca sthito ya eṣa purataḥ kauravyasyāryakasya tu | dyutimān darśanīyaś ca kasya eṣa kulanandanaḥ ||
The verse highlights the cultural-ethical importance of recognizing nobility through conduct and appearance, and of situating a person within lineage and duty (kula and dharma) before judging or engaging with them.
Mātali, observing a striking young man standing before a revered Kuru elder, asks whose son or clan-member he is—seeking identification and status within the Kuru lineage.
