Paraśurāma’s origins and the depletion/restoration of kṣatriya lineages
तवापि पुत्र कल्याणि धृतिमन्तं शमात्मकम् । तपो<न्वितं द्विजश्रेष्ठ चरुरेष विधास्यति
tavāpi putra kalyāṇi dhṛtimantaṁ śamātmakam | tapo'nvitaṁ dvijaśreṣṭha carur eṣa vidhāsyati ||
“कल्याणि! तुम्हारे लिए भी यह चरु तैयार किया गया है। यह तुम्हें धैर्यवान, शान्त-स्वभाव और तप से युक्त, श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मण पुत्र प्रदान करेगा।”
वायुदेव उवाच
The verse presents an ethical ideal of progeny: the truly desirable ‘son’ is characterized by dhṛti (steadfastness), śama (inner calm and self-restraint), and tapas (disciplined austerity). It implies that blessings and ritual fruits are meant to cultivate virtue, not merely confer worldly advantage.
Vāyudeva addresses an auspicious lady and declares that a prepared caru (a consecrated ritual food/oblation) will result in the birth of an excellent Brahmin son. The focus is on the moral-spiritual qualities the child will embody.
