Prāyaścitta-vidhāna: Tapas, Dāna, Vrata, and Proportional Expiation (प्रायश्चित्तविधानम्)
ऑपि--मआफा 2 १. तीन दिन प्रातःकाल
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca |
bhakṣyaṃ cāpyabhakṣyaṃ ca kiṃ ca deyaṃ praśasyate |
kiṃ ca pātramapātraṃ vā tan me brūhi pitāmaha ||
The verse frames a dharma-inquiry: ethical life requires discernment about (1) permissible vs. forbidden consumption, (2) what kinds of giving are truly commendable, and (3) the moral qualifications that make a recipient worthy or unworthy of charity.
In the Śānti Parva’s instruction setting, Yudhiṣṭhira approaches the elder ‘Grandfather’ (Bhīṣma) for authoritative guidance on practical dharma—dietary propriety and the ethics of dāna—so that conduct after the war may be grounded in right judgment.
